Year 12 student, Michael Roberts enters a film for the FOCUS ON ABILITY film festival
Year 12 student, Michael Roberts made a film about his brother, Owen, (a previous student at Kew High school) and entered it into the Focus on Ability Film Festival 2023. The festival asks filmmakers to ‘Focus on an Ability’ of people with a disability and tell a story on film for the world to see. Films are judged by a professional judging panel and subject to an online voting process, with separate prizes for each category. Michael had little to no experience in making a film. But he decided to give it a go. He wanted to show his community and the world what Owen has been up to since leaving Kew High school. Michael has made a terrific little film. Congratulations Michael! It’s a wonderful effort and we wish you all the best for the competition. The films will be screened on September 5 at Melbourne Crown Towers. If you would like to watch the film please go to Focus on Ability.

Beautiful, busy music describes Term 3 in Musicland. We gave a number of performances including at the Jazz and Swing Night, the Victorian Schools Music Festival, the VCE Music Performance evening, Kew’s Got Talent, the Chaplaincy Dinner, various assemblies and whole school assemblies. The Jazz and Swing Night was held off-campus to give students the opportunity to play in a non-school setting, much like doing a normal gig. The event took place at the Richmond Union Bowls Club, a change of venue that proved to be most successful. Many parents and staff attended and were entertained by several ensembles. The annual Victorian Schools Music Festival is open to high schools across Victoria. This year the Senior Stage Band and Intermediate Concert Band participated with great success. The Concert Band received a Silver award and the Stage Band a Platinum Award, the highest that is given. The students were really delighted with both results as was their Director, Martin Corcoran. The VCE Music Performance evening provided our senior students with an opportunity to demonstrate to the audience the expectations of their final performance exams. Kew’s Got Talent was again very popular with both performers and the audience, and even a few teachers joined in with the music-making. This was the last chance for the Year 12 students to show off their stuff and what a fun event it was! Term 4 will see the Orchestra performing for Presentation Night along with other ensembles, the Junior Heat of Kew’s Got Talent, lunchtime concerts and the end of year concert, Q UP. See you all then!
Term 3 calendar has been a full and exciting one for the Eco Crew! Students have made beeswax wraps, mulched various parts of the school grounds, attended a letter writing workshop, embedded more worm towers across the school, and participated in Planet Ark’s School Tree Planting day. This was a significant one as 60 members of the KHS school community including the Eco Crew to plant 60 natives behind the soccer pitch. In addition, Eco Crew students planted indigenous plants around the majestic gum tree between the soccer pitches. This project was designed and led by Yr.7 student Arley Hobsbawn with the help Gardener Phillip. Another highlight of term 3 has been students from the Eco Crew attending the Kids Teach Kids conference held at Edendale Farm in Eltham. This even involved primary and secondary aged students attending from different schools ad presenting on different projects and activities that support the environment and are considered climate action. Special mention to Yr.9 students Eva Lam and Stan Kleynjans presented on implementing an in-ground composting system AKA worm towers across the school. Arley presented on designing and creating native gardens in high traffic zones as well as increasing habitat for wildlife. All students relished the opportunity to be in nature and loved connecting with Edendale’s animals. At the end of the day Kew High School students pledged to attempt to grow duckweed (a future food!) and creating more bird friendly gardens at Kew. Finally, the Green 15 campaign continues and has proven to help reduce the school’s power consumption, cost and carbon emissions significantly compared to this time last year. A lot to celebrate this term!
