Debating
Our Debating and Public Speaking program builds students’ confidence, speech-writing and speech-delivery skills. Coordinated by experienced staff, and with mentoring provided by senior debating students, the program provides opportunities for students to hone their critical thinking and public speaking skills by participating in debates conducted through the Debaters Association of Victoria (DAV) Schools Competition.
Students meet weekly to prepare for debates against teams from other schools in the region. Debates take place regularly throughout the year, and Kew High School fields teams across all sub-school levels (Junior, Middle and Senior).
Through meetings and competition, students gain invaluable experience in public speaking, as well as the ability to think on their feet and respond quickly. Students receive constructive feedback on their progress in a friendly collegiate atmosphere, which promotes marked improvement in skills and ability as each year progresses.
Debating provides an invaluable opportunity for students to challenge themselves and extend their abilities in a safe and supportive environment, as well as fostering positive relationships and friendships with fellow debaters both within the school and throughout the region.
