House system

All students are allocated to a House group when they start at Kew High School and remain in the same House throughout their six years at the school. The House system provides another level of connection to the school and fellow students.

Kew High School has four Houses:

BAAN

Wurundjeri word for 'water'.

BUNJIL

Wurundjeri word for '' a wedge-tailed eagle/creator deity'.

BOROONDARA

Boroondara means 'where the ground is thickly shaded' and is the traditional name for our area.

WIIN

Wurundjeri word for 'Fire'.

These Wurundjeri words were shared with us by Aunty Doreen through consultation via the Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung Cultural Heritage Aboriginal Corporation. We have been allowed to use these words through permission of local elders.

Through these Houses, students can participate in a range of different activities and House events. During Terms 1 and 2, students participate in the three big House events – House swimming, House athletics and House cross-country. Every event that the student participates in earns points for their House. These points are tallied at the end of the year to determine the House winner at every year level.

Other House activities held throughout the year include:

  • House soccer competition
  • House basketball competition
  • Battle of the Bands
  • House debating.

Students are encouraged to participate in as many House events as possible to foster team spirit and to help their House succeed.
