Students in the Vocational Major Work Related Skills class worked were able to apply knowledge and skills learnt in class to propose, design and construct a 30 meter garden path and an accompanying garden bed in term 2 and 3.
Students worked in teams undertaking a variety of roles including foreman, team leaders, safety officer, conflict manager, social media and publications officer.
The class successfully applied knowledge of the National Employment Standards, specifically the Building and Construction Award, when working on site. They were also able to abide by aspects of the WHS Act such as safe manual handling practises, appropriate use of personal protective equipment and hazard identification techniques, when working to deliver this project.
The project would not have been possible without the contribution of some community partners including Paul Mitsakis from CDE Developments (who donated 1500 bricks), Fulton’s Garden Supplies (who donated 1 cubic meter of crushed rock) and the VM teachers (who were able to empower the students to take control and ownership of this project).
